It’s the second month of 2018, y’all!
And while some of you are out here still thinking of where your artists will be “performing concerts” and when they will be “releasing singles”, The ZATHU Band is already transcending our material plane as they tell us about their incredible friendship in “Chinzathu Ichichi” their debut album which is due out on February 19th.
The album will be premiered during a special Zathu Pawailesi radio show which Airs on Zodiak, MBC and Voice of Livingstonia Radios and will then be available for downloads on www.zathu.mw for FREE. That's not all, the album also premiers on Made On Monday with Joy Nathu.
Well, this 3 boys and 3 girls band consisting of Annetti, Chikondi, Mphatso, T-Reel, JP and Xander is dissolving theory and structure and all those other things that we are used to being “Malawian” way of doing music as observed from the singles earlier released off the album.
“It’s a fusion of modern culture and keeping our tradition while we are breaking the stereotypes” said Nyakose Madise who plays Anetti in the band.
Zathu is about more than music- we have our drama and our characters so we wanted to capture this in our album”.
Xander told me when I asked why the album is titled Chinzathu Ichichi which means friendship.
Well I spent about an hour with the band and I kept my cool and not talk a lot while with them so I could observe what they are like outside their music.
Bubbly, charming, full of jokes, teasing one another and all that. I waited to see one of them get mad but all I saw was true friends working together to make music.
I had been listening to their latest realease “Malawi” earlier on and I wanted to hear more about the song from them. “Malawi” which also features a piece of poetry from Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa is a piece that talks about us as Malawians and our way of life. It’s a traditional song that paints a picture of a country we are. They narrated to me during this listening session.
It’s a song for all generations and it will not be a surprise to hear it at most traditional functions in the next few weeks and months. Madalitso Band plays the drums and guiters on this one.
For a moment forget the boring sounds of most rockies on the music scene with an exception of very few who made absolute hits from the word go, forget the stereotype that has always existed about boys and girls working together to achieve their goals and forget the burden that parents place on their children as to what career path to choose in life. Forget all that and listen to the new sound from Malawi with an open mind. “No Limit” talks about all the issues above. O forget what they told you.
This is the death of stereotype. From a radio drama series which has seen 6 characters emerge as winners of a singing talent competition to road shows where the Zathu band has been unveiled, you see the 50/50 boy/girl power at play. In Zimatere their debut song which was released in 2017, they told us that there is power in unity and they followed it up with Sitigonja as they put their foot down to pursue their music talents despite the many oppositions they faced from their parents and guardians even their friends.
When Panga Zako hit the airwaves, it was clear this Band of all amazingly talented newbies on the music scene was not here to waste our time but to create something very new for the youthful ears and very impactful for all generations.
Check out this teaser for the video for "Malawi" below.
Okay, backstory time! Zathu Band came into the limelight not long ago when they dropped Zimatere video that got people asking, “who are these kids and where did they come from?”
Well, I received a lot of those as someone who pokes his nose into the music business. Well, they came and one thing I can assure you is that these lads and ladies are here to stay.
To this day, ZATHU Band has collaborated for over a year now. After playing together at several events in 2017 and featuring in the radio drama series “ZATHU Pa Wailesi, they have now collaborated with Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa, Madalitso Band, on their song Malawi, with Rina Malawist hottest famecee on new song Wokongola and and with Sonye on the song titled Radio. The album also has the voice of the legendary Maria Chdzanja Nkhoma during the melodic Siine Mwana.
ZATHU Band has put its moniker on the hearts of many youthful fans with their 4 singles along with all their electrifying live performances and official launch of their band last year. It's now time for the big project, which promises a sound that could never, ever be replicated again in a long time. According to Theresa who plays Mphatso in the band, they have something unique as they discuss different issues to do with the youth that are covered in the songs. (They really want us to know that.)
Their music follows the story of the 6 band membersand use it to inspire other young people to be bold and standup for themselves and for one another. Featuring wise advices from Gogo, this is not your everyday album.
Produced under the guidance of the one and only Faith Mussa, the project has the hands of the legendary Erick Palian who has produced for other legends including Hugh Masekela. It also has the blessing of Sam Mjura the Airtel Music Star finalist in 2016.
As of now, you can listen and download their singles and follow their radio play from ZATHU website www.zathu.mw , on facebook page ZATHU and check out their videos for their 4 singles Zimatere Sitigonja, Panga Zako and the new one Malawi. Zathu is on a serious mission backed by its positively transcendent branding and video production. Careful though, if you aren’t ready to leave your attachment to object reality in 2018, you probably aren’t ready for this either: Because this Band is breaking every norm that the society had boxed us in. Be on the lookout.
